Another road death (how many more need happen)

A NEWCASTLE solicitor was killed when a turf farm truck plowed into a group of 19 training cyclists.

Dominic Mason, 33, suffered massive internal injuries when the heavy vehicle clipped him as he rode along the Pacific Highway at Blacksmiths, south of Newcastle early this morning.

Mr Mason, a solicitor at Harris Wheeler Law Firm and a member of the Kooragang Cycle Club, had only taken up professional cycling a year ago, and was considered by fellow club members to be a stickler for safety.

Club president Bob Burley said Mr Mason took road safety very seriously and was an active club member.

”He was a very skilled rider, he progressed from D-grade to B-grade within a year,” Mr Burley said.

Crash Investigators are still investigating the cause of the horror accident, which injured a second rider.

A police spokesman said initial investigations showed the truck driver appeared to be travelling in his lane, but may have veered towards the left hand side of the lane and clipped the riders.

Mr Mason and the rest of the riders were on the return journey of their regular Tuesday morning ride, when the accident happened.

”They meet at the John Hunter Hospital and ride to Swansea, and then back again,” Mr Burley said.

Almost 12-months ago, a car plowed into a group of 13 cyclists at nearby Valentine, seriously injuring four riders.

Mr Burley said today’s accident is another reminder of the desperate need for designated cycle training areas.

”There is no doubt this wouldnt have happened if we had an off road training course,” Mr Burley said.

Mr Mason is survived by his wife Michelle, and two young children aged two and five.
